In addition, the Medicare Levy of 1.5% is also payable where a person's taxable income exceeds a threshold amount.
The threshold amount is indexed annually and varies, depending on a person's circumstances.
The Medicare Levy is increased to 2.5% for single people with an income of $50,000 or more, and families
with a combined income of $100,000 or more, unless they hold private health insurance.
Different tax rates apply for
non-residents;
those under the age of 18; and
those who leave full-time education for the first time in a financial year.
Tax offsets are also available which reduce the amount of tax payable. Tax offsets may apply to you if you:
have an income below $27,475;
receive certain Australian government allowances and payments; or
are a senior citizen; or
have any dependents; or
live in a remote area; or
receive certain types of income or incur certain expenses.
